Scratch Pad Astonishing X-Men the
Motion Comic at Marvel Fest
Oct 192009

Spider-Woman Agent of S.W.O.R.D. is a Marvel Motion Comic that I found on Hulu and is also available on Marvel.com and itunes. Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev are the creators behind this Spider-Woman story. It wasn’t a comic that was reworked as a motion comic but was created specifically as a motion comic. After being more than a bit skeptical about this I discovered that it was quite good.

The art is dark, gritty and full of texture that make it hard to turn away. This really looks good and moves well. Fight scenes are fluid and awesome and the skrulls look frightening.

The skrulls are still living and being hunted on Earth after a failed invasion. Spider-Woman’s life has been destroyed by the skrulls and with minimal help from S.W.O.R.D. she’s off to track them down. This is a good first arc of a story, or second, but this is far from complete. There is a lot of back story that was possibly covered in a previous cross over event, how the skrulls destroyed her life, for instance. There is a lot of unanswered questions. Why are these few remaining skrulls so important, that a series has been committed to them? Does Norman Osborne have anything to do with this story or was he just brought in so we could draw a cool fight scene? Is a secret government agency such as S.W.O.R.D. really of so little help?

The effects and voice acting are just as good as the illustrations. You would think that this all would be extra corny and it would be if it wasn’t done so well. There were complaints about the accents which seems absurd to me.

Check this out on Hulu.com now before it’s gone. After that they’ll be available on itunes.com
